Good morning,
Here is a cool article about public schools in New York City. Wealthy foreign people prefer sending their children to public school in Manhattan and Brooklyn instead of private ones. Do you want to know why????
Have a nice day!!!!
Very interesting! It's also educational to read the comments below the article (althought they always tend towards extremes). New York's public school system is really diverse, not only in its student body, but also in its structure. Some public schools for gifted students, for example, are incredibly hard to get into. Zoning (what school you're placed in according to your address) is also a really contentious issue there--the schools are often much better in gentrified areas. I have friends who went through both systems--well-off (rich) kids who went to private school and received a fantastic education, and the children of not-well off immigrants who benefited from New York's great public programs for gifted students.
ReplyDeleteYou have the Spanish version of the article here: http://www.stecyl.es/Opinion/2012/120301_escuela_publica_mundo_real.pdf
ReplyDeleteIn fact I had first read it at www.elpais.com, but thank you. On this spanish newspaper one can find some reports, articles and remarks from The New York Times in Spanish once a week. It is usually quite interesting. I recommend it! Of course, we should try it in English, shouldn`t we?
